Three New-Old Dresses

Hey guys !
Bonjour à tous !

I am so excited to show you my three new refashions !  I went shopping in my own closet for 3 sad and/or unflattering dresses and made them W-O-W !  I have been inspired by many bloggers who do just that:  Jillian from Refashionista, whom I have been following for many years and more recently, Ladygirlvintage and Kristal from Love Street Salvage and of course, Marisa from NewDressADay among others.  There are many ladies that refashion on the internet and they are all fabulous !  It is worth it to go check out their blogs !

So here are my three dresses.
Alors voici mes trois robes.

This was a rayon dress someone gave me and it fit me OK but it just was lacking style and shape.

Looks like I should be wearing a bonnet...

So in many blogs, the ladies start by cutting out the sleeves and shortening the length.  So that is what I did.  I also had to taper it at the waist a tad.    And here is the result:

I absolutely love it !  It is light and feminine.  Just what the doctor ordered for those fun end-of-summer nights on the town !

I was so encouraged that I decided to continue.  I found this one, again with the polka dots.  Another gift from someone.  I loved the color and the cut of the bodice and collar but, man, the length !!!  It looks like it is eating me !!!

So I thought of doing something a bit different: a slight hi-low hem.

I think it looks very polished and perfect for work.  It is also very comfortable.

Again, I was very enthusiastic to go on.

And then I found this one.  This has been in my wardrobe since I went to El Salvador to work in 1996 !  Yep folks that's how long I keep my clothes !  My mother has a picture of me wearing it in a very trendy club in San Salvador.  I love the color red and I guess it was in fashion at that time but, again, the length !  And this one was "adjustable" at the waist with laces !!!  Which means that it was too large for me now...  What to do, what to do ?  I had my work cut out for me with this little ditty...

So I started by hacking out the dreaded shoulder pads... ugh..., the lace, the loops for the laces, the sleeves and then 8 inches of length.  The result was not satisfactory to me.  And the buttons were metal and had bled into the fabric creating very dark stains.  Not pretty...  I did not take pictures of the whole process but it was brutal.  So I decided to hack off the buttons and buttonholes and to use a zipper.  But not just any old run-of-the-mill zipper: a shiny zipper, made of rhinestones - one that I got from Moods in NYC baby !!!  And of course, you don't just regularly sew a shiny rhinestone zipper - You sew it EXPOSED !!!  Now, even when I was finished, the dress still was very big on me (remember the laces...)  I did not feel like unpicking princess seams (no way jose !) so I cheated: I made bust darts and crunched the straps.

So here is my hot little number:
Alors voici mon petit bijou:

I absolutely ADORE this dress !!!  You can see the shiny zipper and the oh-so-flattering silhouette !  I will be so proud to wear this dress on a night on the town and say that it is my creation !

Here are the before-afters again:
Revoici les transformations:

So I had so much fun doing this, I am certainly going to continue !

Have a great day !

Peace

Claudia
